Benyaro composes & performs original film score for “Searching For Fortune”

We are stoked to announce Benyaro’s Ben Musser has written, performed and recorded his 1st original film score for the indie feature Searching For Fortune, produced by Distant Thunder Films out of Los Angeles & San Francisco, CA.

Directed by Joseph Matarrese & written by Brian Smolensky, Searching For Fortune is a dusty tale of self-discovery, friendship and roughneck life in the Mountain West. The film follows roughneck oil worker, Michael, who lives in a small mountain town in Colorado as he deals with the death of a brother he never knew and the proposition of helping his brother’s widow have the baby they always wanted. Smolensky stars as Michael, Christina Moore as Emily, the widow, and John Heard (Big, Home Alone) plays Michael’s father. Tom Costello, Aaron Munoz, Sam Munoz & Michael Kripchak also star in the film. Ben appears in the film as the “bar band” leader with Al Martinez and Philbilly playing bass & drums, respectively.

The film has been mentioned in Variety and Entertainment Weekly.

As composer, Ben’s job was to create an original Americana film score to accompany the tale and its many beautiful shots of Colorado landscapes, open spaces & rugged, industrial shots of oil rigs. The score includes 40+ minutes of original music and score.

The score was recorded entirely at Ben’s home studio in Jackson Hole, WY and features Ben on steel and nylon acoustic guitars, electric guitars, piano, toy piano, harmonica, vocals, brushes and drums. Upright bass was performed by Benyaro bassist Leif Routman and Marty Camino, both of JH. Danny Kadar mixed the score in New Orleans, LA. Thanks to all of them for their help and wonderful talents!

In addition to composer, Ben acted as music supervisor and appears in the film to perform a song; Scott Claassen’s “Scotch & Lemonade”, which makes for a lively bar scene sing-along as the group of roughnecks celebrate being home, off the rig. Malcolm Holcombe’s “Who Carried You” also appears in the form of a Benyaro cover in the film. The soundtrack is rounded out by 2 additional Benyaro tunes of old; “Feelin’ Low” & “Bullet-Like Belief”, written by Ben Musser & Scott Claassen, respectively.

“Searching For Fortune” now sets out on the indie film trail where it will be submitted to various film festivals, both national and international, and screened privately. All this with the hopes of “selling” or acquiring distribution so that the masses, including you, may view the film and hear the score. We are hoping for the best and will be sure to keep you in the loop!

Until then, keep doing what you love, and thank you for your support.
