Hey Blog-readers, thanks for stopping in.
We are excited to announce some November tour dates with our friends Shovels & Rope, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, & The Blackberry Bushes String Band.
Shovels & Rope (Charleston, SC) are on tour supporting their new release SWIMMIN’ TIME (Dualtone) and have been receiving much deserved praise from Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, NPR, NY Times, and countless other media outlets. I was lucky enough to meet Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, the married couple who comprise Shovels & Rope back in Charleston in 2008. I will never forget walking into the Trusted Palette, a now-extinct north King St. watering hole, and hearing these two singing the hell out of Gram Parsons’ (w/ Emmylou Harris) “Return of the Grievous Angel.“ I remember thinking “you do not hear this up in New York City!” where I was living at the time. It was an indelible moment for me as I had recently discovered Parsons, myself. We chatted after the show, I gushed about Parsons and a relationship started. They had been playing shows under their individual names but soon changed their name to Shovels & Rope and started touring frequently & hitting up NYC — I remember seeing them at Arlene’s Grocery. A relationship continued. A year later, Benyaro was back in Charleston and ran into S&R at a benefit concert at The Pour House. Cary Ann asked if Benyaro would want to get up and do a few songs during their night on the porch at The Pour House. Hell, yes. It was an honor, we were grateful, and a relationship continued. We were lucky enough to be offered supporting slots with them at the end of 2012, just as their label debut O’ Be Joyful (Dualtone) was blowing up. We couldn’t do the shows, though, and it has plagued me for years. Shovels & Rope went on to win “Song of the Year” and “Emerging Artist of the Year” 10 months later at the 2013 Americana Music Association’s Awards Ceremony. I was there to witness & congratulate my friends, and see first hand that good shit can happen to great, hard-working musicians. As their success has grown, we have longed for the opportunity to play with them once again; to warm the stage for them. Finally, that opportunity has come back around.
Shovels & Rope w/ Benyaro ~ Jackson Hole, WY @ Pink Garter Theatre ~ Friday, November 14 – TICKETS
In a related story, I first came across Holy Ghost Tent Revival (Raleigh, NC) several weeks after we sadly declined the support opportunities with Shovels & Rope in late 2012. Weeks later, I looked to see who was supporting the dates and saw Holy Ghost Tent Revival’s name, and a cool name, at that. I listened to some music, liked what I heard and tucked them into my memory bank of cool bands to work with in the future. 8 months later, I heard they would be in Jackson Hole to perform. I was in town and took the chance to see/hear them live & meet some of the band. They put on a rockin’ headliner set and were easy going guys, which is not always the case. When we saw that HGTR was coming west again this Fall, we were pumped. Luckily, their Boise date worked out with our schedule and alas…we’re stoked to be supporting them!
Holy Ghost Tent Revival w/ Benyaro ~ Boise, ID @ Neurolux Lounge ~ Tuesday, November 11 – TICKETS
Finally, The Blackberry Bushes (Seattle, WA) is a fun, virtuosic group we worked with in Tacoma, WA a few years back. We tried putting more shows together with them at the time, but scheduling kept us at bay. We were happy to hear their tour routing intersected with ours, in Pocatello, ID, so we’ve teamed up for randy night of music in Pokey to celebrate the 1st National Bar surviving the Monarch Building Fire.
